Extended Reality (XR) in Construction: Transforming Design, Building, and Operation

Apr 2025 · By Matteo Giovanardi

Introduction

XR – encompassing VR, AR, and MR – is redefining every stage of the construction lifecycle. From initial design conceptualization to on-site construction and ongoing O&M, XR is enhancing accuracy, fostering collaboration, bolstering safety and improving efficiency across the entire building lifecycle.

Unity and HoloBuilder

Unity enables immersive XR applications for AEC – VR walkthroughs, AR overlays, and MR simulations at full scale before construction begins, with BIM model integration for improved decision-making. HoloBuilder revolutionizes site monitoring with 360-degree AI-powered photo documentation, integrating with Autodesk and Procore for automatic updates and historical tracking.

GAMMA AR and XYZ Reality

Gamma AR allows construction teams to overlay digital models onto physical environments, minimizing construction errors by ensuring installations align with design specifications. XYZ Reality introduces Engineering-Grade AR projecting highly precise digital blueprints onto construction sites with sub-millimeter accuracy – contractors can construct directly from holographic plans.

PROMETHEUS: XR for dynamic building envelopes

PROMETHEUS, a collaborative initiative between LEVERY and EXVIRIENCE, focuses on integrating XR into dynamic building envelopes. This project enables facility managers to interact with real-time data on energy performance, shading adjustments, and smart façade operations through AR and MR. XR allows maintenance personnel to overlay digital information onto physical façade systems, providing real-time guidance for maintenance tasks and access to technical documentation.

Conclusion

The case studies provide compelling evidence of XR's transformative power across the entire construction lifecycle. The integration of XR is no longer a futuristic vision – it is a present-day reality reshaping how we design, build, and manage our spaces, contributing to sustainability by reducing errors, optimizing resource usage and enhancing the longevity of built environments.
